PRE-VENT®
Horse
Feeders
- Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do
PRE-VENT®
horse feeders
work?

|
A.
PRE-VENT®
horse
feeders
were specifically
designed to slow
down a horses’
ingestion of
food with its
patented
compartments at
the bottom of
the horse feeder that
only allow a
small portion of
food in the
horses’ mouth at
one time.
|
|
Q.
Why
are
PRE-VENT® horse feeders
so effective?

|
A. PRE-VENT®
horse feeders
were
developed to
slow the horses’
rate of food
consumption by
forcing the
horse to
concentrate on
its eating, by
only being able
to retrieve a
few pellets at a
time, this
engages the
“thinking” side
of his brain.
The horse then
begins to use
his tongue and
lips and relaxes
while eating.
This can help
reduce the risk
of Choke and
Sand Colic while
dramatically
reducing feed
waste. |
Q.
How do
PRE-VENT® horse feeders
help reduce the
risk of Choke?

| A. Since
PRE-VENT® horse feeders
only allows the
horse to
retrieve a few
pellets at a
time during
feeding, this
prevents the
horse from
gulping
or "bolting" its food
and developing a
large ball of
feed that can
become lodged in
the esophagus.
|
Q. Why is it so
important to
slow down my
horses' eating
habits?

| A. Slowing your
horses’ feed
consumption is
beneficial for
your horses’
sensitive
digestive
system, and it
drastically
reduces the
risk of choke, a
very serious
condition in a
horse that may
require
immediate
medical
attention and
costly
veterinary
expense. |
Q. How do
PRE-VENT® horse feeders
help prevent my
horse from
ingesting sand?

| A. PRE-VENT
horse feeders
eliminates the
occurrence of
the horse
bolting large
mouthfuls of
feed and
dropping it on
the sandy
ground. It is
during the
retrieval period
of the feed from
the sandy
ground that
the horse will
pick up not only
its feed, but
sand and dirt as
well. The unique
patented
design
of
PRE-VENT® horse feeders help
naturally keep
the horses’ head
down during
feeding, helping
to prevent the
horse from
lifting its head
in and out of
the horse feeder,
avoiding
spillage and
sand ingestion. |
Q.
What if I
don’t live in a
“sandy” area of
the country?

| A. “You don’t
have to live in
the South or the
Southwest to
have sand
accumulation,”
says Dr. Ben
Buchanan DVM,
DACVIM, DACVECC
of Brazos Valley
Equine Hospital
in Navasota,
Texas. Sand is
everywhere, and
even dirt
contains small
particles of
sand. No matter
where you live,
your horse can
ingest sand and
prevention is
the key in
keeping your
horses’
digestive system
healthy. |
|
Q. If my horse
isn’t a greedy
eater, how can
my horse benefit
from using the
PRE-VENT®
horse feeder? |
| A. Most
veterinarians
would agree that
slowing down a
horses’
ingestion of
feed can only be
beneficial to
your horses
‘digestive
system. By
slowing the rate
of feed
consumption you
are also slowing
the digestive
process. |
|
Q. I’m feeding
my horse
expensive feed
and pricy
supplements, yet
he still doesn’t
seem to be
benefiting from
these. Why is
that? |

| A. When the
horses’ thinking
side of his
brain is not
engaged while
eating, it is
operating off of
his reactive
side, causing
the horse to act
as it would in
the wild, i.e.
fearful of
predators and
other dominant
horses
attempting to
take his food.
It is during
this time that
the horse will
constantly lift
his head from
his feed bucket
to look around
causing it to
drop mouthfuls
of grain in the
wood shavings
(if stall fed)
or in the
sand/dirt
outside. PRE-VENT®
horse feeders
help keep your
horses’ head in
the feeder
during feeding
time, helping
eliminate costly
feed and
supplement
waste. |
Q. Why would my
veterinarian
tell me to put
rocks in the
bottom of my
horses’ bucket?

| A. For years,
veterinarians
have been
advising horse
owners around
the world to
place large
rounded rocks in
the bottom of
horse
feeders to slow
down the rate of
feed consumption
or to prevent
“bolting” of
feed. If you
have ever tried
this technique,
you know that
your horse is
much smarter
than this and it
may try to tip
the feeder,
causing feed to
spill on the
ground. Or the
horse may get
frustrated and
attempt to bite
at the rocks,
which can result
in a horse
chipping a
tooth, leading
to costly
veterinary
expense. Now there is an
answer that
makes sense!
PRE-VENT® horse feeders
will help slow
your horse
during feeding
time! |
Q. Is there any
other product on
the market like
the PRE-VENT®
horse feeder?

| A. NO! PRE-VENT® horse feeders
are one-of-a-kind. There has
never been a
design like the
PRE-VENT®
horse feeder.
The
manufacturers of
horse feeders
have changed the
shapes and sizes
of feeders over
the years, but
these
traditional
horse feeders have not
been able to
help with so
many common
feeding problems
as effectively
as the PRE-VENT®
horse feeder. |
Q. I only own
one
horse, so why do I
need a PRE-VENT®
horse feeder?

|
A.
Not only
were
PRE-VENT®
horse feeders
designed to
prevent common
feeding problems
that can be
very
costly
to fix
and even potentially
deadly,
they also saves
horse owners
$$$$$$. PRE-VENT® horse feeders
helps to
eliminate
feed
waste by keeping
your horses head
in the
horse feeder
and the feed off
the ground! |
Q.
My horse is an aggressive/greedy eater will he be able to use the PRE-VENT® Feeder?

|
A. Absolutely! The
PRE-VENT® Feeder
will slow down your greedy eater and keep him from spilling mouthfuls of feed onto the ground. We recommend that you secure your feeder 6 – 8 inches off the ground. This will make it hard for your horse to try to tip the feeder over. It may take him a few tries but he will catch on by using his tongue and lips to slowly retrieve all his feed. Also our
horse feeder is made of durable polypropylene plastic, its flexible, contains a UV protectant layer and it is backed by a 5 year warranty! |
Q.
My horse destroys every feeder we’ve ever purchased, what will keep him from destroying this feeder?

|
A. The
PRE-VENT® Feeder
is made of a very durable type of plastic called polypropylene, it is flexible and is backed by a 5 year warranty,
unlike most traditional “horse feeders” on the market today. The
PRE-VENT® Feeder
also forces your horse to concentrate while eating, which takes his mind off the usual bad habits he developed in the past eating out of traditional “feeders.” |
Q.
What will keep my
horse from tipping
over the
PRE-VENT®
Feeder??

|
A. The
PRE-VENT® Feeder has 3 sets of 2 holes on the lip of the feeder. Just like any other
horse feeder, it needs to be attached. We recommend that you secure the feeder & raise it a little higher(6-8 inches off the ground) for horses that may try to tip the feeder over. Eventually, it won’t take long, your horse will understand the process and you can lower it a little once you noticed that this behavior has stopped. Before you know it, you can leave it on the ground, still secured, so your horse is eating with his head down in the natural grazing position. Please see

Q.
I feed my horse out of a large tub inside a tire so he can’t tip it over, can I do this with my
PRE-VENT®
horse
feeder?

|
A. Yes you can. If this keeps your horse from tipping over your current
horse feeder then it’ll work with a
PRE-VENT® Feeder. |
Q.
How much does the PRE-VENT®
feeder weigh?

Q.
Why is the
PRE-VENT® horse feeder so large?

|
A. The
PRE-VENT® Feeder’s design from the size, shape and color were no accident. The size is to accommodate your horses’ large head while he retrieves every last morsel of feed from each compartment. The sloped sides also follow the natural shape of your horses’ jawline. We have been programmed to think that the traditional small feeders or feed pans on the market are ok to feed our horses from. But when we take a closer look, we start to see how much
feed is being wasted. Horses don’t like the feeling of confinement, this is one of the reasons they raise their heads out of traditional
horse feeders and drop feed all over the ground. Lets face it, we are feeding a horse not a Rottweiler! |
Q.
Why should I buy a PRE-VENT®
horse feeders, I already have corner feeders?

|
A. The
PRE-VENT® Feeder
saves horse owners a considerable amount of money based on feed and supplement waste, not to mention farm calls for common feeding problems such as choke and sand ingestion/colic. The corner feeder doesn’t address or help prevent any of the feeding problems discussed above, in fact the corner feeder is one of the reasons these problems occur in the first place. Ground level feeding is recommended by veterinarians as this is the natural way horses eat. |
Q.
What if my horse tries to “play” in the feeder or poops in it?

|
A. The
PRE-VENT® Feeder
is very easy to attach and detach in the stall or outside. If this is a problem for you, simply remove the feeder after your horse finishes eating. |
Q.
I’m afraid this may make my horse mad or stress him out.

|
A. The
PRE-VENT® Feeder was specifically designed to NOT cause horses any stress. It actually relaxes the horse when he moves from compartment to compartment, this simulates grazing. The compartments in the bottom of the feeder have been tested successfully on many, many horses of all shapes & sizes. If your horse has a tongue, he can retrieve every bit of feed in the bottom of the compartments. Some horses may take a few feedings to figure it out, some get it right away. Be patient, this product will slow your horses rate of consumption down considerably, eliminate bolting of feed and drastically reducing
feed waste! In the end, we all want the same for our horses, a healthier digestive system!! |
Q.
My horse doesn’t have any problems spilling feed, he cleans his feed up in 5 to 10 minutes!

A. While we are happy to hear that your horse isn’t wasting his feed, we’d like to address horses that eat WAY too fast. Horses are not intended to eat anything that fast, their digestive systems aren’t equipped to handle concentrated feeds quickly or a large amount because feed needs to be chewed slowly (and in the fashion that horses chew while grazing), at ground level to allow the proper amount of saliva flow to break down the concentrated feeds before entering the stomach and small intestine. Why is it so effective?
The moment they
perceive danger, they
react and take flight.
With PRE-VENT® horse feeders,
a horse must
concentrate and use his
tongue and lips to
retrieve the feed from
the bottom of the
PRE-VENT feeder,
engaging his “thinking”
side of his brain.
The
horse will naturally
slow down and relax
while eating. This
method slows down the
rate of consumption and
the digestion process,
allowing for a healthier
digestive system!
